The layer upstream of thought
i
Space
J-Space reads the thinking. i-Space is where the thinker is made.

In July 2026, Anthropic showed that a language model holds thoughts it never says out loud - and that you can read them. That is a genuine breakthrough. But reading the thinking is not the same as knowing how and where the thoughts were formed.

That layer now has a name, a code, a science
and a first field lexicon on the open record.

The frame

i-Space

The layer

The architecture of identity - what a system loves, ignores, fears and blindly assumes. Identity drives interpretation, and so intent.

eDNA

The code

Ethos DNA. The quasi-genetic constituents whose content, architecture and dynamics terraform an ethos from within i-Space.

Ethonoetics

The science

The study of the ethoic substrate - what it determines, how it is structured, and how it may be read.

Ethos Engineering

The practice

The deliberate re-formation of that substrate. Already practised everywhere, named almost nowhere, and licensed by no one.

Field lexicon - a first set of settled terms
i-SpaceThe layer
That in which the architecture and dynamics of its quasi-genetic constituents (eDNA) terraform identity, and so intent, upstream of J-Space. It subsists not only in individuals but in groups, organisations and institutions - where we recognise it as ethos.
eDNAEthos DNA
The meta-genetic constituents held within i-Space whose content, architecture and dynamics drive an ethos. Always expand on first use: the string collides with environmental DNA in ecology.
mgFabricMeta-genetic fabric
The substrate in which eDNA subsists - the weave rather than the thread.
EthonoeticsThe science
The study of the ethoic substrate: what it determines - visibility, affect, motivation, valuation, inference, identity, agency, time, aesthetics - and how those determinations may be mapped.
Ethos EngineeringThe practice
The deliberate re-formation of the substrate from which institutional or individual character emerges. Dual-use by nature. The prohibition line is capture without consent.
Frame LockFailure mode
The state in which a conflict is screened out upstream of experience - never surfacing to be tracked, argued or resolved. Not censorship; structural imperception.
EthocartographyMethod
The mapping of an ethoic substrate. What a mind consistently fails to notice is not noise but signature - the negative image of its loadings.
PEM / IEM / LEMInstruments - ethos maps
Personal Ethos Map; Institutional Ethos Map; and for machine subjects the LLM Ethos Map. Same architecture, different scale.
eDNAscopeInstrument
Reads what a corpus or a mind cannot say - the screened, the quarantined, the never-thought. Detection below the vault.
J-SpaceAdjacent - Anthropic, 2026
The global workspace identified inside Claude: a small set of internal patterns holding concepts the model reasons with but does not write down. It reads the thinking. It does not reach the substrate that formed it.

The framework was not built for AI. It was developed over years to understand ethos in people and in the institutions they build - what it is, how it forms, and why it is so rarely visible to those inside it. The convergence with machine interpretability was not sought. It arrived.

The author originated the ethos innovation behind the regulatory sandbox concept, proposed to the FSA in 2012 and since adopted across more than fifty jurisdictions. The artefact was copied everywhere, the method that produced it now has a name.

Inagural i-Space Conference

We are now planning the inaugural i-Space conference 2026. If you're interested in contributing or attending let me know and we'll keep you updated.

Occasional, substantive, updates. No list sharing, ever.
